Hair Urgent Care and Other Stuff

My hair has reached that stage where it is impossible to do anything with it.  Have you ever noticed how that happens literally over night?  I've been growing it out and trying to even it up again.  It's too long to do what I'm accustomed to doing with it, and too short to do anything else.  Tomorrow I'm taking the plunge and getting it permed.  When all is said and done, I expect to look exactly like this person:

Oh, and did I mention that while I'm waiting for the perm solution to work its magic, I'll also be getting a face lift and  liposuction?  Oh yes, and building a time machine so that I can travel back in time about 30 years.  And hopefully, I won't be disappointed.  Otherwise, that person you see in my profile picture who is wearing a paper sack over her head will be me.

I used to perm my hair.  I permed it for years--decades, even.  Then I started putting color on it.  And then, shortly afterward, my hair started thinning and falling out.  I stopped perming, but kept coloring until just last year, when I stopped all processing, hoping that my hair would be less thin.  I think it has worked.  So now that I've given my hair a break and let new hair grow in, I think I'll go back to processing and start the cycle anew.  I figure I only have a few decades left, and so maybe perming won't catch up with me this time.  We'll see.  On the other hand, maybe I have a future as a bag lady.

Possibly I could work up some sort of pattern for head bags and sell it online.  What do you think?

So I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who have offered up suggestions about my Forest Giant project.

I am going to continue with it, and I'm considering the best way to proceed.  As I've told a few of you, I think I need to let the sting of a bad beginning fade a little, but I won't put it aside for too long.  I can't emphasize enough how much I have appreciated your encouragement, your suggestions, the tutorials you have shared with me, and your support.  You are a wonderful community of bloggers, quilters, and photographers, and it warms my heart to hear from so many of you on a regular basis.  Thank you.

Today I went back to a project I intended to do before finishing up the Love Me, Love My Cat quilt.  In the interest of finishing up the quilting before the end of the month, I set aside the Hello Sun quilt I've been working on until today.  Today, I finished the top!

I used the triangles I cut off the stars to make some pinwheels to use as cornerstones.

Now I'm trying to decide between two fabrics for the binding.  You can see them at the extreme right of this next image.  What do you think?  I'm a little partial to the rainbow fabric, but I'm wondering if it will be too much.

I didn't have anything appropriate for the back, and so I found this next fabric on Fabric.com today.  I think that will be perfect.

Also, I finished the first vertical row of The Birds Return, which is my June NewFO stand-in when Forest Giant turned out to be such a problem.

The June NewFO linky party and giveaway goes live on Sunday!  Are you ready?  This month, everyone who links up will have a chance to win the bird needle nanny.

Today, quilting buddy Pat and I went to a going-out-of-business sale for a local quilt shop called The Quilted Hill.  Despite being out in the middle of nowhere, The Quilted Hill was a going concern.  Our understanding is that there are health issues involved.  Sadly, this cute little shop will cease to exist as of Saturday.

Fabrics were marked down 50%, books 60%, patterns 55%, and if you took the end of a bolt, fabric was marked down 55%.  I came home with these three.  The polka dots in the middle were the end of a bolt.

Also, I purchased this crib quilt pattern for one of my non-existent grandchildren because, goodness knows, I don't already have enough baby quilts to make for them.  Actually, I liked the animal appliques around the outside, and thought they would be useful in other projects.

It was a little like picking over a carcass to be taking advantage of a quilt shop going out of business, but I guess that's the way it goes.  Pat and I agreed that it's sad to see a quilt shop close...especially one that is so far out in the country.

So tomorrow, if I have time, I'm going to start sewing together the blocks for the Heart of the Home table runner I started back in February.

The last time I worked on this, I made the heart blocks.

I think my next trick will be to sew it all together.

Also, we're going to take off for another three nights at the beach this coming weekend.  We had such a great time a few weeks ago that we decided to go back and spend a little more time.  I'll say more about that in another post.

For now, I'm signing off.  Wish me luck on my perming tomorrow.  Or at least wish me a wrinkle-free bag.

If you have to resort to a bag, pick a pretty one. Not plain brown! It is sad to see nay quilt shop go under.

I would go with the rainbow binding.

I like the rainbow for the binding too - it'll only be a little bit showy. :)
That is sad about the quilt shop. I'm glad you did get some nice fabric & that pattern is very cute - great animals!
Good luck with your perm too! I think the more modern ones are a little less harsh on your hair. I know they aren't nearly as stinky!!

Oh the decades of perms, been there and hope the urge never rears its ugly head again. Yes the rainbow binding looks totally perfect! Have fun at the beach, sounds like we have a super weekend coming up.

I like the idea of the head bags, but then started to wonder if I could afford one -- realized that if I sent you a photo you might make one for me as a public service. :) Great projects. Both fabrics are nice for your sunshine quilt, but I always opt for stripes, just love that look!

You almost have me cringing in a corner with the perm talk, but I think you will look exactly like Meg Ryan.
I like the rainbow, it's not to much and pulls all of the colors, that quilt is so cute!
Back to the beach? I hope you get the same campsite, have a great time.

So glad your hair has been coming back in Barbara - I've never processed mine except for the occasional perm, but it's now so thin that I wear a wig when I want to look nice. I'm sure your perm is going to make your life so much easier!!! So sorry I missed the post on your Trees!!! I'm off now to dig in the back posts to see what happened. Love the rainbow binding on Hello Sun!!! Oh, and I'm jealous that you're going back to the beach! Bwaaaaaa!!!!

Hey, no fair, you get to make ANOTHER trip to the beach? Hmmmph.
I also belong the thin hair club, and wear a wig when it looks particularly puny. Seems to be kinda seasonal. Wierd.
Love the rainbow fabric - it will be great!

Oh, you need color on the Hello Sun - the rainbow really pulls it all together. And what perfect backing fabric!

I hope your perm turns out to your liking. If not, at least make yourself a pretty, colorful head bag! lol
I the rainbow binding best. The yellow just seems a bit light for the outer edge.

Yea! Hello Sun is done. I like the rainbow fabric as a binding. Just my 2 cents.

Hope you like your perm and new style. My 14 year old doesn't understand perms, of course she has naturally curly hair, which I would have killed for at her age. Last year all she wanted to do was straighten hers.

I like the rainbow fabric as the binding for Hello Sun, which is just such a cute and fun quilt.

I love the way the sun quilt turned out and totally agree with using the rainbows for the binding. Yes it is sad to see a quilt shop close. I love the building they were in.
