Six More Blocks

Today I went down to Newberg and did my Curves workout.  I missed most of last week because of my knee acting up.  Today it was better, but I still found that the impact of running in place between machines was too much.  When I came back home, I iced it, and that helped to keep it from flaring up again.  Tomorrow I'm going to have my doctor take a look at it.

After that, I worked some more on my Two Grandmothers quilt.  I did six more blocks today, and so that leaves ten to go.  Here is what I did today:

Humpty Dumpty was pretty easy.

I just quilted the bricks in the wall.

Old King Cole wasn't too difficult.

For him, I did crowns.

Here's another rhyme I wasn't familiar with.  Do you know the rhyme associated with Curly Locks?

Curly Locks, Curly Locks,
Will you be mine?
You shall not wash dishes,
Nor feed the swine;
But sit on a cushion
And sew a fine seam,
And feast upon strawberries,
Sugar, and cream.

So with that rhyme, it seemed the easiest thing to do was strawberries, and that's what I did.

The strawberry design was inspired by a motif I found in this book, which I reviewed on my blog right here:

Then, for Hey Diddle Diddle, it was tempting to do something related to cats for the "cat and the fiddle".

Instead, I decided to quilt the fork running away with the spoon around the edges of the block and a meander of loops for the rest.  I wanted to quilt inside the plate to make sure it was well secured.

The fork and spoon motif were inspired by a motif in this book by Laura Lee Fritz:

And I just want to say that her books have been invaluable on this project.  You'll see another one from this book below.  I have three of her books, and today I went on Amazon to see if she had published any more. I found two more I don't have and so I purchased them.  Now I can't wait to see them.

After that, I moved onto Little Bo Peep.  It was hard to decide what to do with this one.

My inclination was to quilt sheep's hoof prints, but they look exactly like pig's hoof prints, and I've already done those on two blocks.  (You'll see the second one below.)  And there was so little space to work with on this block that ultimately, I just quilted puffy lines to represent fluffy sheep's wool.  This is probably my least creative one so far.  Oh well.  It's good enough.  Sometimes good enough just has to be, well, good enough.

Now, do you know the rhyme for Tom, Tom the Piper's Son?  I thought I knew it, but I looked it up just to be sure.

Tom, Tom, the piper's son,
Stole a pig, and away did run;
The pig was eat
And Tom was beat,
And Tom went crying
Down the street.

Okay, so that rhyme didn't give me much to work with, and I didn't really want to do just pig's hooves again.  But I did have that nice space up by Tom's head.  So...I did a pig!  Now keep in mind that I cannot draw to save my life, but Laura Lee Fritz's book came through for me on this one.  Here's what I did:

Can you see the pig?  And then I quilted pig's hoof prints on the rest of the block.

So that's it for today.

I don't know if I'll have time to do any sewing tomorrow.  I'm going to work out and have my weekly check-in with my Curves coach in the morning, and then I need to see the doctor about my pesky knee.  Hopefully, I can get a few more done.

How did your President's Day go?

Love your quilting on those blocks. When I get home I'm going on Amazon to look for a couple of the books you have recommended since I'm starting to get the hang of FMQ.

Hope your knee is OK. It's annoying how things conspire to get in the way of good intentions and knees are particularly pesky that way.

I am really enjoying seeing all these little motifs... you do them so well :) I didn't have President's day but I did have a good Family Day (a provincial holiday that I always take off because it sucks to go to work when not even coffee shops are open lol)

Love all your co-ordinated quilting with the motif of each block - great pig! But why does the "R" in PIPER have but one leg? ;p

Love all the creative quilting you are doing on this quilt. It will be quite the heirloom quilt when it is finished. Gee, now you really need a grandchild, so that they can inherent this quilt of your mother's and yours.

Curly Locks was not familiar to me, either. Judging by how she's got it made, I wish someone would have clued me in a lot earlier! :)
