Saturday Stitching

Today I worked on three different projects, although I spent the bulk of my time fusing the applique pieces for the Acoustic Montage wallhanging.

First, I finished up the 2nd stitchery called "Smell the Roses" for Block B of the Gardener's Journal quilt.

Along with the lawn mower, these are the two stitcheries in Block B.  I still need to do the piecing for both Block A and Block B, but I'll do that in good time.  I  have a long way to go on this quilt, so there is no rush.

With that one done, I traced out the last of the eight stitcheries for the Love Me, Love My Cat quilt.

When this one is finished, I'll be ready to start putting the pieces of the quilt together.

Then I turned my attention to the fusible applique for the Acoustic Montage wallhanging I'm making for my son.  These were some of the largest applique pieces I've ever worked with, and I went through a lot of Heat 'N Bond making them.  I cut the centers out of the fusing medium on the large guitar pieces to maintain the drape of the quilt.

I didn't have enough of the blue background fabric (at the top) to make the whole foundation piece, and so I pieced it with some white muslin.  I'm not very happy with the way that white muslin shows through the yellow guitar at the bottom right.  Still, I'm planning to quilt this heavily, and I think it will be less noticeable when the quilting is done.  Also, I'm going to use a metallic thread to quilt the guitar strings, and I believe those will distract from the muslin too.

The yellow guitar in the upper left corner also has guitar strings, as does the aqua guitar on the mid-left.  The black circle on the aqua guitar is the sound hole, and so there will be strings quilted across that area from the edge of the quilt to the red guitar.

The bright green guitar on the top right also has guitar strings.  The aqua oval shape is supposed to be the guitar's bridge, and so there will be guitar strings quilted diagonally and down toward the left side.  (I hope that makes sense.)

I still need to do the top-stitching on all of the pieces.  I'm kind of leaning toward a zigzag stitch close to the edge or else a straight stitch right at the edge.  For now, I'm going to do something else.  I end up standing the entire time when I'm doing applique, and it's time to get off my feet for a while.

This is my third NewFO for the month of January.  Did you do any sewing today?  Are you ready to link-up with your new projects next week?

The little garden gal is so sweet and the guitar quilt is awesome! If you hadn't mentioned the front guitar (muslin showing through, etc) I would have thought it was planned that way...I think it looks great!!! The quilting is going to be crazy fun!!!

I love your embroidery. It's not something I like doing, but I surely love seeing what you've done. 6 newFO's wow, you are moving through January aren't you.

The "garden lady" turned out nicely. Love the Guitars. Great progress.

I have one new project to link up with. I may get another one started tomorrow. We'll see. Drama Teen has been pretty sick today and I didn't want to get too far from her. She was too dizzy to get up and do much on her own.

I did not notice the hollow in the yellow guitar! It looked like an acoustic guitar with a light behind it!

Love how the montage is coming along-it's beautiful and look forward to the reveal. I began machine quilting Squares and stripes yesterday so that's my current project. then to hand tie Diamonds in the Corners. We moved a lot of clutter out of corners yesterday and I must say the cleaner lines around the place are inviting...

Wonderful stitcheries, both. I can't believe how fast you can work them, Barbara! Hey - do you ever have any difficulty stitching on the white-on-white fabrics?

I'm really looking forward to that guitar quilt! I think the muslin just looks like shading on the yellow guitar - no worries at all. :D
