Dolly Delight

Today I finished my little primitive cloth doll.  Isn't she sweet?

Many thanks again to Sharon Vrooman for the tutorial she posted.  This is Sharon's original design, and she generously shared it with all of us.  While it took me a while to finish this little doll, it wasn't difficult.  It definitely helped to have a little model to refer to.  Now that I have the templates made and now that I've made every conceivable mistake, I think the next time around will go much more smoothly.  And there will be a next time!

So here are the two dolls.  Sharon made the one on the left, and mine is on the right.  Now they are dolly friends!

My dad used to sing this song to me when I was a little girl.  I found myself thinking of it as I made my little doll.

Oh little playmate,
Come out and play with me,
And bring your dollies three,
Climb up my apple tree,
Slide down my rainbow,
Into my cellar door,
And we'll be jolly friends,
Forever more, more, more!

When I was finished with her, I decided to make my block for this month's Block Lotto.

This month's block is a Tall Shoofly.  We were asked to use a white or white-on-white background.  Our print was to be a combination of white, true reds, tomato reds, spring greens, lime greens and black.  I'm thinking you can't get much more tomato red than with actual tomato fabric.

Aside from laundry, that's pretty much what I did today, other than stumbling around in the freezing cold taking pictures of frost.

How did you spend your Thursday?

Since these dollies are new to me, I'm linking this post to:

Awwww...your dear little dolly is just that! I love her in purple and yellow, too. Glad she's got a friend, right off the bat! I spend Thursday in EQ, stitching down pendants on June's quilt, catching up on blog reading and comment responding, and watching the deer and birds in the sleet and snow (such as it was). Overall I'd say it was a nice day! :)

My dolly's got the flu)

The dolly came out great!! I remember that song! We would sing it while doing a hand slapping (think Patty cakes) kind of thing. Yup, that's tomato red!

Today has been a day of service for a friend who had cancer surgery and needed a bit of help in her home to get things ready for her return from hospital. I have made a good friend in the last couple months and she was a huge trooper in this endeavor.

Awwwww..... what a sweet little dolly, and how kind of you to provide the first dolly with a friend! And a sweet memory of good times with your dad when you were little - priceless!

Cute dolly. I've not heard that song your dad used to sing.

Love the tall shoo fly block.

My kids loved that song. I remember two girls sang it at the elementary school talent show! I picked up the next block in my pieced Halloween BOM and made another folded snow flake. I have to get the others back from the shop so I can show them! I messed this one up and may rip it out!

I love the little dolls. The song your dad used to sing is new to me but is very sweet. I like your lotto block and the tomato fabric is fab. Yesterday's frost photo were amazing again. Here in London it's 7.45 am and I've just got home having set out for work earlier. The snow is moving towards London, all my students have cancelled coming into university and I'm having a snow day and I'm going to sew sew sew. Yipee!

Oh, look how cute the two together! You need to stitch up that little song. Love the tomato fabric - brilliant in this block!

My Thursday was not as great as yours. The dolls are wonderful, so pretty and primitive. I remember singing that song too although the words I remember were ever so slightly different. Funny how they change, my kids had songs I sang and their words were a little different too.

Cute doll, think you will have a whole sisterhood of these sometime soon!

Just started snowing here today, so a sewing day is called for.

Your dolly is adorable! Love your colors.
The "Playmates" song used to be in a music book we learned in Elementary School. My mother was a music teacher, and she taught it to us. Brings back wonderful memories!

What gorgeous winter pictures! Enjoyed them so much, and seeing
Smitty learning what ice is!

Reminds me of the Amish/rag dolls I used to make back in the '70s and '80s with no face. At that time, skipping the face was welcomed by me. I hadn't really gotten into embroidering such things. Now that I have a g.grand, one of these would be very appropriate! Thanks for the link, too!!!!! Hugs, Doreen
