Results May Vary

Look for the November NewFO Linky Party and Giveaway right here.

You see, here's the thing:

Committing to an exercise program is not enough to achieve results.  One must actually exercise too.

I've been trying to go swimming on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  "Trying" is the operative word in that sentence.

When I was a therapist and my clients would say to me, "But I'm trying!" we did this little demonstration together.  I would say to them in my meanest supportive therapist voice, "Try to get out of that chair."

Of course, they would immediately stand up.

And I would say to them, "No.  I didn't say to stand up.  I said to try to get out of that chair."  The point being that "trying" is not the same as "doing".  (Don't you just hate it when what's good for the goose is also good for the gander?  I would be the gander here.)

So this morning, I've pulled out all my excuses for not going, to-wit:

1.  I'll take December off and go after New Years.  It'll be my New Year's Commitment.  (Right.)

2.  I have to go to the grocery store.  I can't possibly go swimming and to the grocery store on the same day.  (Really?)

3.  It's raining.  (Like I'm not going to get wet while I'm swimming?)

4.  It's cold.  (They do have a really nice hot tub at the pool.  I could start there.)

5.  I really need to finish up the binding on this quilt.  (Uh Huh.)

6.  I've been really good.  I can take a day off.  (Except that I haven't been really good, and I took last week off.)

7.  I know.  I'll step on the scale.  If I weigh less than "X", I don't have to go.  (Oh.  Very sad face.  Shouldn't have eaten so much Divinity.)

How am I doing?  Do any of these work for you?  All of them?  None of them?  (Me neither.)

So, okay.  I'm going.  But I refuse to like it.

I'm right there with you...decided to start counting WW points on Sunday again but haven't gotten out for a walk yet. Why is it that all the good habits are so hard and the bad ones so easy?

The only way I've managed to stick with my Zumba class at the Y is that I became the volunteer class assistant. That way they're counting on me being there, so there's extra motivation.

Kudos for going and I just know that you will feel better physically and mentally afterward. One less guilt trip to take yourself on! :D Now I just need to motivate myself.... lol

Well you just motivated me to get out and do my hours walk this morning. The forecast is dreadful but not raining yet and I had almost decided not to go until I read your blog just over an hour ago. I am trying to walk two or three times a week and go to aquarobics once a week. So far this week one walk done and one session at aquarobics so half way there. By the way it hasn't rained yet so got home dry. Now I am off for a soak in the bath before heading out to town for some more christmas shopping.

Good grief. You actually have to DO it? This explains a lot about why I keep getting fatter. I'm going to have to sit and give this some thought . . .

I think we must've been separated at birth - you're singing my tune! I only wish your post had inspired me to work out... I can't - I have to go grocery shopping ;)

It is not so much the swimming or exercise for me, it is the getting there!

When I was talking to my orthopaedic surgeon about my foot pain, I asked him if losing weight would be helpful. He told me yes, it would--and then proceeded to dictate, "discussed with patient that losing weight would be beneficial to alleviating stress and pain on ankle, but patient understands it's to be by diet and NOT exercise." Bingo! Tell me those aren't words every girl wants to hear?! :)

ehh I asked my mum to check up on me. So she's been calling me every Tuesday evenign for th last couple of weeks asking me how the swimm trainign went ... I meant it as a joke when I signed up and asked her, but she did it .. still does occassionally ... And I really don't want to tell her why Icouldn't go. I always tell ehr how bad it is that she'S finding one excuse after the other, so I really can't make excuses.

Hahaha! I think you've been reading my excuses list!!! I can't believe I am so organized about everything else in my life and I refuse to get down to business with my health!!! Hearing you say you are struggling encourages me to get beyond the struggles too :*) I'm doing dancercize to Pandora while I sew today!

Love yor bow tie finish, nice work!
Your exercise dialog stuck a major cord with me, thanks. Tomorrow I'll set me clock 30 minutes earlier and use the treadmill and shower before the grand children get here. Thanks for the incentive and inspiration.

Yeh, move over and make room for me in that boat! Sigh. You would think all the wood hauling I've been doing would count as exercise. Apparently not...the scale isn't budging.
