Power is Out

Our power went out around midnight last night. As I write this at 5:35 am, it's still out. I'm writing this post on my phone. (How did we live before all these wonderful gadgets came along?)

I've reported the outage, also using the phone and the internet. I'm told there are 213 customers affected in my zip code and that a downed tree is the culprit. We've been experiencing a helluva storm the past 24 hours or so. We've had wind gusts up to 47 mph. This excites Mike because he monitors the wind turbine (also with his phone) and he reports the power generation to me approximately every 24 seconds or so. Engineers are easily amused.

I'm also told that the power should be restored around 11:00am. I sure hope so because I need to go hunting and gathering for our Thanksgiving feast. It hardly makes sense to buy a bunch of groceries when there is no refrigeration. On the other hand, that turkey will surely be thawed by the big day. But then, on the other, other hand, my oven is electric. My cooktop is gas. I suppose I could whack up the turkey and fry it like chicken. Mmmmmmmmm sounds dee-lish, doesn't it? Stuffing might be a problem however.

And then there is the little matter of no water. Vexing to say the least. The pump for our well is also electric, and so once the water in the holding tank is depleted, there will be no water either.

I should probably stop typing now and cross my fingers instead. You'll thank me for that, won't you? I'm a bored blogger. What can I say? And my sewing machine won't work either. Sigh.

Sorry to hear you are out of electricity. You need to find an old straight stitch sewing machine and convert it to a hand crank, or get a treadle! Got any good books you can read? It's light outside!

Ouch! Our power was only off from around 1 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., though we just got internet back a while ago. Around 4:00 hubby insisted we needed to get the generator going so he could get a shower and drive to work in Newberg. Of course the plug for the generator's battery had come undone, so battery was dead. So then he hauled the generator all the way around to the other side of the house to the carport and jumped it with battery cables, hauled it back around, and got us plugged in. Like you when power is out: no power and no water. A few years back he wired in a "generator box" connecting most of our breakers in the main box to it, and one huge plug comes into the house via an old dryer vent opening and gets connected to the "generator box" and we're up and running all but the stove and heat. At least there's coffee and hot water! Oh, the power came back on while he was in the shower, so back outside he went to put everything away. Life in the hinterlands! Sorry this is rambling-been awake since before 2 a.m. Hope you're back up and running soon. I have a 1933 Singer hand crank for days like this!

I already know it's back on, so I won't worry over you! Whew! That was a close one ... frying turkey bits sans stuffing! Yuck! :)
