Quilt Shop: The Stitchin' Post

It was so exciting to look at the map toward the end of our trip and note that we were going to be passing through Sisters, Oregon, home of one of my favorite quilt shops of all time.  I visited The Stitchin' Post a couple of years ago when I attended the annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, which always happens on the second Saturday in July.  What a wonderful shop!  It was every bit as delightful as I remembered it.  I blogged about it once before, and you can read my previous post right here.  In that old post I said I thought Jean and Valori Wells were sisters, but actually, I think they are mother and daughter.  If you know, say so.  In any case, here is my updated review of The Stitchin' Post.  And may I just say that if you ever get a chance to visit the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, it is well worth your time.  Visiting The Stitchin' Post is just an added bonus.

The Stitchin' Post is located on the main highway as you pass through Sisters, Oregon.  Sisters is named for the mountains in the area.  It was smoky yesterday, and so they aren't as beautiful as they might be on a different day, but here they are.

Even the sign at the front door puts me in a good mood.

Here's how the shop looks as you approach.  The two businesses (The Stitchin' Post and Twigs) are connected.  Twigs is a home and garden shop.

And I just love this door pull.

Here's how the shop looks when you enter through the front door.  It is so colorful, spacious, and inviting.

See the quilt in the upper right of the above image.  Below is a closer shot of it.  It's called Folk Art Cats.  I have this pattern in my cat stash (yes, I have a separate stash for my cat fabrics and patterns).  After seeing it again, it has suddenly moved to the top of my to-do list.

There is a style and color of fabric for everyone here.  Two thirds of the building are devoted to fabrics, notions, patterns, books, etc.  There is fabric everywhere you look.

Look at these great polka dots below!  Sorry about the focus.  What can I say?  My hands were quivering with excitement.

Look at these bold colorful prints.  What I need more than grandchildren is a larger fabric budget.  And a larger place to store it.  What I really need is my own quilt shop.  Sigh.

My credit cards were trying to jump out of my purse by this time.

And look at these great ribbon displays.  So much fun here.

There were lots of regionally themed patterns and kits.  I liked that the patterns were right next to the display quilts so that they were easy to find.

Honestly, I won't live long enough to make all the quilt patterns I have now, and so I've sworn off buying them.  This quail wall-hanging was tempting, however.  I love quail.

Are you familiar with the work of Jean Wells?  Some of her quilts were displayed.  Ordinarily, I'm not a huge fan of these kinds of modern quilts, but I did like these fish very much.

Here's another of one of the mountains of Oregon.

There was a large classroom in the back of the store with a lively class in session.

If you're into knitting or crocheting, the remaining one-third of the store is for you.

I'm not a knitter, but I used to crochet.  Maybe one day I will take it up again.  If I do, I know where to find some beautiful yarn.

I ended up with two yards of these two fabrics.  The first is a bright orange-red batik.  I have used this color in so many quilts, and I used the last of it in my Daisies & Dots quilt.  It's more red than this image shows.  I love the color, and since I don't have any more, I grabbed it up when I saw it.

Also, I liked this pastel batik.  Batiks tend to be darker, and I kind of liked the rainbow of pastels in this one.

So what else?  I gave this shop five rotary cutters out of five, as I did the last time I visited.  It is so beautifully organized and a pleasure to walk through even if one doesn't buy a thing.  There are beautiful quilts on display and fun colors and designs everywhere.  Definitely don't miss it if you are in the area.  And if you are looking for a short and delightful vacation, consider attending the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on the 2nd Saturday in July some year.  You'll love the town of Sisters, and the quilt show is really something special.  And bonus!  You can visit this great quilt shop.

That was our last stop before home.  Smitty and Gracie made peace in Mike's lap the for just about the first time yesterday morning.  He still drives her crazy, but she doesn't growl at the very sight of him any more.  As long as he can resist biting her tail (which is very hard for him), she tolerates him pretty well.

Today I unpacked the trailer.  Tomorrow I'll need to go to the grocery store.  It's a busy week ahead.  I'm going to the Farmer's Market with Erik on Saturday.  Mae is recovering nicely from her back surgery, and she may feel up to going with us Saturday.  In any case, both Erik and Mae will be coming up for dinner on Sunday.

Next week is busy too.  Smitty goes to the vet, I'm getting my monthly pedicure, and I'm also getting my hair cut.  So lots to do.  I'm hoping to do some sewing before Monday, but Monday will be a sewing day for sure.  Now if I can just find a place for all the fabric I bought.  I think my stash report is completely blown for the year.  If you'll recall, when I left on this trip, I had four stitcheries to work on.  I did almost no sewing the whole time, and I'm still working on the first of the four.  It's about 2/3 complete.  I'm way behind on my monthlies, but then, no one is paying any attention but me.  Think I'll delete that from my list of things to worry about.

Don't forget!  Sunday the linky party goes up for your September NewFO's.  I have a couple.  I hope you do too.  I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Oh wow! That fabric shop looks so great. What fun I would have in it. LOL Our nearest quilt shop is Missouri Star Quilting, but that is probably at least 60-70 miles away, so JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby it is for me. :) I love the last picture with the kitties sitting in Mike's lap. I would love to be able to love on them both. :)

That quilt is sew YOU! Maybe both cats will come around. Smitty is still a baby. He'll learn. Maybe more of the spray bottle.

Jean is Valori's mom. I have one of Jean's first books--from the late 70's or early 80's--somewhere. I think it's about making vests. Valori was a model for one of her mom's garments--and was not at a cute stage in childhood. She's grown up to be much more beautiful. Jean was doing quite traditional stuff with lots of embellishments. (And I'm not sure she'd yet opened a shop.) I need to go looking for that book one of these days!
Glad you were able to stop and shop there.

I wanted to wait till you were home to reply to all your lovely posts. Just so enjoyed the sharing of your traveling aventures - for someone who can't make those kinds of trips, it is so delightful when others share. And such a wonderful trip!

I love that cat quilt, you have to make it. I have a ton of patterns too, time to start making them, so I am trying not to buy or get tempted, lol.

The cat quilt is great....I bet when you opened the door of that shop, you thought you'd gone to heaven...after all, you had been seeing those signs of how you would die that day! LOL What a wonderful adventure you have had, and so many memories made.
Glad Mae is improving, and hope you have a lovely weekend! Hugs!

Sisters Quilt Show is on my bucket list, I love the idea of an outside show. I can't believe you only bought two pieces of fabric, I saw at least a dozen I would have had to have, such restraint, good for you.

We drove through Sisters when we were in Oregon. Since it wasn't my "day" to pick the activities, I didn't get to stop. Probably one of the few times my family wasn't willing to indulge me.

It is definitely a 5 in my book too. It is one of those places that you wish you had an unlimited bidget when you walk in the door.

I'm impressed with your self control! I would have blown my fabric budget - not to mention my grocery and fuel budget at that store. I doubt i would have been able to resist those quail - I've not seen those before. Very cute.

That is one beautiful shop. Maybe I'll get there someday. I knew those two fur balls would cozy up to each other before the trip was over.

My goodness gracious!!! That's an amazing shop with some absolutely gorgeous fabrics! I'm so glad it was you there instead of me because I would have broken the bank I'm sure. I seem to have no will-power when it comes to gorgeous fabric .... I want to buy it all, and usually buy way more than I should :*)

I'm with you on moving the Folk Art Cats up on your to-do list! When I saw the first photo of it up on the wall I thought it was a Laurel Burch quilt - it's wonderful!!!!
