Saturday's Sewing

Today I took my first Irish door a little bit further.  I think this is as much as I'm going to do with this one until I actually start assembling the quilt and quilting it.  I still want to add shingles on the roof, maybe some sort of texture to the walls of the house, and some quilting in the sky and grass.  Also, I have on order some tiny hot fix crystals to use as light bulbs in the lanterns on either side of the door.  I think I can fit a 2 mm crystal there.  Also, I'm going to add a door knob, and I have some hot fix nail heads on order for that.

In case you missed my first post about this, here is the image of the door I'm trying to copy.  I'm pretty pleased with how this is looking so far.

Now I'm feeling confident enough to move on to the next door.  I perused my library of Irish doors and settled on this one.  It seems simple enough to do, and I wanted to do something other than white for the next one.

That will be for later, however.  I'll print out the picture and keep it in the sewing room so I can look at it and plot my strategy.  I'm cutting the backgrounds on these blocks to 10 inches, and then trimming them to 9 inches with the idea that the finished blocks will be 8 1/2 inches.  My goal is to make 12 blocks, but I may decide to do more.  I want the quilt to be small enough that I will be able to free motion quilt it on my domestic sewing machine.

Then I fused the applique pieces for the July Hello Sun block.  This BOM is courtesy of April Mae Designs. April left the choice of colors up to us this month, and this is what I came up with.

The solids I used in the water were scraps I had leftover from when I made this quilt.

I had given away all but one of the rows of blues I had stitched up for this, but had enough to make the Hello Sun block.  I think it works!  The hardest part was deciding what to do for the colors of the fish.  What color are fish anyway?  Except for the ones I've seen scuba diving in the tropics, they all seem to be silvery, and I didn't think that would work for this quilt block.  I settled on the greens with scales.  Big scales.

Tomorrow I'll finish it up with the top-stitching, and then I think I'll be ready to start something new.  Don't forget that the July NewFO Challenge is just about a week away.  Have you started something new yet this month?

Love the details you added and just noticed the roof, lol. Great use of fabric to mimic the shingles.

Great job on your first "Irish Door" block. Love all the details, they look wonderful. Your sunny BOM block is very cute. It's your block, I say the fish can be any color you want.

Start something new. I'm not sure my mind can take in another project, but I'll give it some serious thought!

The details look great! You inspire me to try too, but that won't be this year, too many other projects on the list and before we know it is Chirstmas again! :)

Love the way your shamrock door is coming along! The light fixtures are amazing and will be perfect with your planned embellishments! The next one was one of my favorites :-). The Hello Sun block is not usually such a challenge - you did a great job, especially with that fun fish!

Oh, I'm so excited that you have started the Irish Door Quilt! Your first door is magnificent. I just don't know how you'll pare it down to 12 doors. You may have to make multiple quilts if you want to keep them manageable to quilt. What fun it will be to choose all the little details.

The Irish door looks great! Isn't it amazing what a few tweaks and embellishments can do to jazz up a piece? Keep going you're on the right track.
