Fun Fact Friday Freebie

Before announcing the winner, I have a little announcement of my own.  Since I'll be traveling to Ireland during the month of June, I've decided to lighten my load by putting Fun Fact Friday Freebie on hiatus for the entire month of June.  What does that mean for you?  It means that there will be a FFFF question today and next week.  On June 1st, I'll announce the winner of next week's FFFF, but there will be no question of the day.  FFFF will return with a new question on Friday, July 6th.  And if I find something super cool in Ireland, there just might be a special Irish giveaway!  Watch for it!

So with that announcement out of the way, here's the announcement you're all waiting on tenterhooks for.  (Love that word.)  I generated a number at random and came up with:

#62--Carla G!

Congratulations, Carla G!  I've contacted you via email, so check your inbox.

When my son Matthew came home for Mike's birthday last week, he arrived in town with some friends from the heartland who had never been to Portland.  He sent me a text message letting me know he was showing them some of the sights around town before coming home for the weekend's festivities.  I was curious what sorts of things he showed them, wondering what his favorites in our nearest city were.  As a military brat, I was far into adulthood before I lived in a place long enough to call it home.  Matthew and Erik, on the other hand, were born and raised in the same town.  I wondered what, in his hometown, had captured his fancy.

He told me he had shown them various clubs and districts around town, and he also told them about our Portland Farmer's Market.  That would definitely be one of my favorites, along with the Portland Saturday Market and Powell's City of Books.  So that got me wondering . . .

What attractions would you tell
visitors to your local area not to miss?

As always, you must leave a comment with your response to the FFFF question of the day to be eligible to win a fat quarter. Followers can leave an additional comment for an additional chance to win. And if you have my FFFF button posted on your blog, please leave an additional comment for a third chance to win. Winner will be announced next week.

Well, we lost a lot of our visitor's sites with the flooding. I would say the local museum "The Olde Stone Fort", Howes Caverns and Vrooman's Nose (Mt. & hiking trail).

My town isn't a tourist destination, but I guess I would take visitors to see our lovely countryside, the nearby Great Lakes, and our local mini-farmer's market, zoo and museums.

Wildlife Safari is always mentioned and our local wineries since they're popping up like crazy around here lately. And if they're a quilter, we have to go to the local shop that has over 1000 batiks.

As I'm rather new to my area, I really don't know what's around myself. I do know that there is a small animal auction twice a month at a small local stockyard. Ummm, the biggest town within 30 miles is Chillicothe, the home of sliced bread. Other than that, I am still learning myself.

Well... that might be very useful to you! I'd show visitors the island where I live, Aughinish, and I would also take them to the Burren to see the views of Galway Bay.
Another place they shouldn't miss is to visit Coole Park, a beautiful forest and park that used to be the estate of Lady Gregory. Oh! and Kinvara's Farmers market is on every Friday from 10 to 2... with live music and all!

I love to take visitors to Carter Caves and at Christmastime, Festival of Trees in Ashland.
Have you heard if your quilt made the trip safely yet?

Nashville is definitely a tourist city, so there is much to choose from, depending on the visitor's cup of tea :*) We always take visitors to see the Opryland Hotel - it is enormous and almost like a city itself! The gardens there are just simply amazing, and during Christmas it is a true wonderland. And of course, every visitor has to take a tour through downtown Nashville in the evening to see the honkytonks, up close & personal!

I live in Central Florida and there are lots of sight seeing places to take in. But I think I would tell them not to miss Fantasy of Flight in Polk County. It's small, but lots of fun.

I live in a dinky little farm town. I love it. When we have had visitors we have taken them for a ride in the woods to see the wild life and to a local lake to play in the sun. We have a large dairy farm in the middle of town. There is also a store, Ebels Family Center. They sell every thing from food, clothes, hardware, chainsaws, scooters, flowers and trees, lawn mowers and home appliances. If you don't see it, ask and they can probably order it for you. I love my town.

We always take people to Multnomah Falls if it is their first time here and then take them on the loop around to Mount Hood.

I tell visitors to stop by The Levy County Quilt Museum, Fanning Springs Parks, and to check out one of the area springs (Hart Springs / Sun Springs / Otter Springs). They are off-the-beaten-road and free/inexpensive.

Well, first off, I don't blame you for taking a break - you deserve it!!

We have been traveling in our RV for the last 5 years, so we're really kind of new to our "home"town, but we volunteer at the zoo, so we always take visitors there for a "backstage" tour. We often get to take them behind the scenes and get upclose & personal with the animals. That's always fun!

Then, since we only live 27 miles from the coast, we've gotta go hit the beaches...and the fudge shop, of course. And if it's a quilty friend, why then we've got 4-5 shops to hit...and the farmer's market, and the old courthouses around here are really something to see!

Port Aransas Nat'l Wildlife Refuge is always a fun place for birding and alligator watching...

But, surprisingly, most people find our own backyard and our local grocery store (HEB Plus) to be their very favorite places to be!! I love that!!

In Seattle it would be Pike Place Market and the Waterfront. Then stop by and see the Freemont Troll Under the Bridge. Always fun.
BTW there are plenty of good quilt shops in the area.

I would say that they should visit the town of WIckford. You can park at the docks and walk around the town. There are gift shops, antique stores, crafts and plenty of seafood. If you walk down the side streets you can see the old churches and homes, lots of historical buildings and the water is within sight, at most places.

First we would go to Graceland for the tour; to Beale Street for the music (and some good food); to Cooper-Young area for the artists; Shelby Farms for the buffalo (yes, you read that right); dinner at one of our famous BBQ restaurants and when evening approaches down to the Mississippi River for the sunset which isn't half bad if you spent time watching the sun set on the Pacific.

KatheG said...

I follow you.

Janet said...

The view mostly. If they are here in summer I would take them to the visitor information centre and the two, no make that three, touristy stores in town, but I wouldn't recommend them particularly. When we have visitors we take them out in the boat, motoring, canoeing or sailing and go fishing or hiking. In winter it is skating or cross country skiing. :)

In our area is the Baseball Hall of Fame - I guess that is the best thing! Also next weekend is one of the longest 70 miles - canoe race in the US on the Susquehanna River - General Clinton Canoe Regatta. Thats a pretty big deal around here. A guy from Canada wins practically every year. Otherwise, it is really pretty boring but thats okay with me:)

Charlie comes to stay next week, so our little fuzzie friend will liven up the place:)

On Parliament Hill (Our seat of Government)there is a group of cats that live there. They have a little house built for them, and they get fed everyday... they are super friendly and I love going to visit them. It started with one lady who found some on the Hill and started feeding them, and now years on the tradition continues.

Gosh, Knoxville is surrounded by so much beauty in the Great Smoky Mountains, that's a tough one! I think the closest thing I wouldn't want someone to miss is The Museum of Appalachia It's off exit 122 on I-75, just north of Knoxville, only a mile east of the freeway, so easy on, easy off.
