Pony Express Quilt (Square in a Square Method) Update

After griping about the Pony Express Sampler quilt the other day, I wanted to update you on the response I received from the designer.  I wrote them an email on Friday evening (rather in haste, and so it wasn't very friendly).  The response came in Monday afternoon.  This is what they said:

Thanks for your purchase.  Everything we do is the Square in a Square technique and since you are new to that you will have the extra expense of one of the rulers.  However, once you have it, you will be set as we have written 25 + books using this same ruler and we think you will be amazed at what it can do to speed up and help you on the accuracy of your piecing.
We have filmed each block of the Pony Express Sampler and you can watch them on our website anytime for free.  CLICK HERE  . . . Click there and we have all the videos for you to view.  You probably can figure out Option 20 by watching or I can send you a free video if you will send back your mailing address.
Call or email back if we can help you in any way.  We hope you enjoy making the Pony Express Sampler quilt.
So that was a nice response to my pissy email.  I did ask them to send me the video for Option 20, and when it arrives, I'll watch it and then give this another try.  Hopefully, I'll be able to start this project that I've so been looking forward to.

Regardless of whether the videos are helpful or not, I've decided to go ahead with the quilt and substitute similar blocks for any blocks I can't figure out from the pattern.  I really like this quilt and the Pony Express history included in the pattern book is really quite interesting.  I'll share it with you as I go along.  But that's a different day.  Soon, I hope.

Good for them! It's nice to work with companies that are friendly and helpful when we need to reach out to them. Delighted you're back on the Pony Express Train!!!!

It is nice that they can send you a video. I prefer patterns that say cut and make, no tools or thinking, lol. You sure got a lot of snow, we got some rain, but the sun is trying to come back out.

I took a course using the Square in a Square method some years ago. The quilt, a Christmas quilt, turned out fine, but I've never used the tool since. Like WoolenSails, I prefer patterns that don't require special tools because, most times, I like to change them up a bit and put my own spin on the pattern. It is nice, however, to see a company that responds back in a positive manner. Will look forward to seeing how you are progressing on the Pony Express Sampler. It looks like a quilt I'd love to make.

She has also written some historical novels. I've read two of the three. They are good. Good luck with this quilt. It looks challenging and pretty.

I like the look of the pattern but hate having to buy "one more ruler". I think your idea of changing up the blocks a bit is a great idea.

It's nice they responded quickly. I really think you are so talented that you could make the squares any way you wanted and it would look the same, as long as the material worked out.

I think that I would like to sew this quilt with you, but am not willing to buy a new tool. It will be a huge stretch to purchase the book...and I think that by watching the videos that I should be able to make these blocks. I will let you know, and I do look forward to watching the progress that you make and share with us!
Aloha, Andrea
