Mother Goose Blocks Repaired

This morning I completed the embroidery repair on the last of the Mother Goose blocks.  Peter's wife (you know the one held prisoner in a pumpkin shell) got a new shoe on the one foot she's managed to break free.

This post was nearly entitled, "When Good Nursery Rhyme Characters Go Bad," because I thought there must be more to the story about Peter locking his wife in a pumpkin shell . . . some sort of explanation beyond the fact that he "couldn't keep her".  There wasn't any that I could find.  Sheesh.  I guess the moral of this rhyme is to beware of men growing large pumpkins.

Little Bo Peep, for her part, got new shoes, a new little tie on the back of her pinafore, and new centers in the flowers on her dress.

Mother Goose got a new hat and new reigns on her goose, presumably to keep the goose from bucking her off.

Did you know that Mother Goose has her very own rhyme beyond being the namesake of this collection of rhymes?  She does:

Old Mother Goose,
When she wanted to wander,
Would ride through the air
On a very fine gander.
Jack's mother came in,
And caught the goose soon,
And mounting its back,
Flew up to the moon.
Ya' gotta wonder about these people.

Now that the blocks are all repaired, I'm going to trim them down to get rid of their raggedy edges.  Then I'm going to sew them together and put a green sashing between them.  (I'm trying to keep the colors neutral.)  Then I have this great Mother Goose fabric for a border and the back.

That may be the only sewing I'll do all day.  The sun is shining and the temperatures are supposed to be "mild" today, as opposed to the bone-chilling ones we had yesterday.  That means George will be pawing at my leg wanting me to go outside with him.

First, however, I need to do quite a bit of cooking today.  Mike and some buddies are heading up to the Puget Sound to do some scuba diving this weekend (speaking of bone-chilling).  Since I tend to limit my scuba diving to warm water locations, that just wasn't my cup of tea.  I'm going to stay home and sew the whole weekend!  But just to show him what a nice guy I am, I'm doing all the cooking.  All they have to do is light the pilot light in the RV and heat things up.

This morning I made them some breakfast burritos.  They can take those out of the freezer and microwave them.  Credit goes to Moms Crazy Cooking for that idea.  Also, I'm making them some Turkey and Artichoke Stuffed Shells with Arrabbiata Sauce, which I blogged about here.  For their second night of dinners I'm making some marinade for steaks; and for snacks, I'm making some homemade granola bars.  The granola bars are some I saw Alton Brown make on his Good Eats show.  You can find the link to the recipe right here.  They are the best granola bars, and easy to make.  I like to make them when Mike and I are traveling in our RV.  I wrap them up individually, and they make a nice snack when we go hiking.  Yum.

So with that, I'd better get on with things.  I have miles to go before I sleep.

Those Mother Goose blocks are going to be great when you get it all put together. Those nursery rhymes confused me when I was small. Maybe the correct word is scared?

I guess I really need to brush up on my nursery rhymes after reading about them on your blog - I feel pretty clueless. Your meals for the guys sound deliscious!

My kids never cared for the nursery rhymes. :) They didn't like how the people treated each other, and how they treated their animals. But your blocks look great!!
What a great plan...turn them loose with "eats" and turn you loose to sew. LOL
