This morning, I walked with my friend, Sue. Can you tell we do as much laughing as walking on our Friday morning treks?
Sue and I used to share a suite of offices when I was working. After I retired, she and I started walking on Friday mornings. We've been friends since around 1998, and we've been walking since 2005. Our youngest sons are both engineering students at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. We are both social workers. We have many things in common. I don't have a sister, but if I did, I would want her to be as loving and supportive a friend as Sue has been to me.
We haven't walked together since before Christmas, and so we had a lot of catching up to do. The weather was wonderful today, as it usually is for our walks. As I've told you many times, it rains nearly every winter day in Portland. It keeps on raining throughout the spring. It starts early in the fall. Despite our wet climate, in all the years we've walked, we've only walked in the rain a couple of times. No matter how threatening or nasty the weather has been during the week, it seems to clear up for us. There have been times when it has rained all the way to our meeting place, stopped while we walked, and then started sprinkling just as we reached our cars to go home. I like to say, "The Universe is smiling on us today!" Clearly, we must be doing something right.
The very first quilt I finished was for Sue. It wasn't my first quilt . . . just the first one I actually finished. The pattern was called "Girlfriends." When I saw it, I knew I had to make it for her.
Poor little wonky quilt. I had never done applique before. In fact, there were a lot of things I did with this quilt that I'd never done before. A few months later, Sue brought her camera and a tripod on one of our Friday morning walks, and we took this picture of ourselves together.
Did you notice that my Winter Wonderland quilt is entered in this week's Quilting Gallery Contest?
Some of you did, and you told me you gave me your vote. Thank you! Check out the quilts here. If you like my quilt, your vote would be greatly appreciated.

Your story brightened my day. So glad you have a walking buddy and good friend. Quilt is very nice, too. Happy Weekend.
You are very lucky to have such a special friendship. Love the quilt of you two together! I voted for the best quilt at the Quilting Gallery - Yours :)
Voted for you! Love your quilt!
What a wonderful post. The quilt really made me smile, I would never know that you hadn't been doing applique for years, maybe because you made it with your heart.
Another vote for your gorgeous quilt from the end of the dirt road. Aren't friendships like that such a blessing? I love your friendship quilt and I'm certain Sue treasures it!
I cast my vote.
Thanks for sharing the story about your friendship. You are lucky ladies to have found each other. Everything is more fun when you share it with a friend.
The rain holds out for your friendship, what a sweet thing. Besides that little wall hanging looks happy to be wonky.
You know, I was raised in Portland and I just never noticed it rained so much. After I moved away (age 16) I heard my mother complaining about the rain and I said, "what rain?" But it sure is beautiful there. Love your story and the quilt.
I voted for this quilt even tho I had no idea who it belonged to. Love blue and white quilts and I love the winter designs.
I have a large 'chosen' family - we've been friends since the 70s, at least. They take good care of me!
I voted for Winter Wonderland too!
I voted for you this morning. Great quilt. Isn't it great to have a special friend? Mine is 1200 miles away.
