When I sat down to sew this afternoon, I didn't expect to finish this top, but there you have it. I started out by finishing the remaining two out of four "pony" blocks:
With those two now finished, I had this much accomplished:
When I started this quilt, I had a vision of what I thought the sashings and cornerstones would look like. Sadly, as I started cutting and figuring, I realized that it wasn't going to work the way I had envisioned it. It took quite a bit of thinking and trying to wrap my brain around the math, but eventually, I came up with this.
The quilt measured 24 x 24 inches by this time. I had in mind to add another two borders, but decided to settle for one. That brought the total size of the quilt to 29 x 29, a very respectable size for a doll quilt. And here's how I ended it.
The back will be made from the same Laurel Burch "Dancing Horses" fabric, and I'll use a deep blue batik for the binding.
I haven't given a lot of thought to the quilting yet. I think I might do some pebbling in the "pony" blocks and then some straight line quilting in the sashings and cornerstones. Then maybe I'll just do a meander or a swirl in the outer border. This is the variegated thread I plan to use to quilt it.
For his two cents, George would like to say that the day totally sucked! It was too cold to go outside, sewing is boring, and he really is not happy about this winter weather.
Nothing to do but sit by the window and sulk.

Aw, hope you are staying warm! Those ponies are adorable. Love the bright colors!
Love the thread, I use the varigated to hide some (not all) of my imperfect quilting stitches. Thanks again for the Occupy Your Quilt Room challenge. You've got me quilting again. I'm having a blast. Just simple stuff, but projects I've put off doing until the time was right. I had forgotten that NOW is always the best time. Happy Wednesday.
Love the ponies! I love Laurel Burch (who doesn't?!?) and that fabric just shines in there. Your sashing is perfect; it almost makes a mini-quilt out of each block, letting them be the focus of the quilt. Some little girl is going to be very happy!
those ponies are tooo cute! Great work!
Brrrr, I'm cold just looking at your kitty!!! I think your pony quilt is just to cute :):) stay warm.. Hugs
Very pretty and unique doll quilt. I would have thought that the horse fabric would be too busy, but it works beautifully with the solid horses.
Poor George. I hope tomorrow is better!
Don't you just love it when a variegated thread just matches perfectly with your project?? Could you incorporate some kind of horse shoe design in the border quilting... in a meandering sort of way?
Oh those ponies are so stinking cute!!! You did a great job on them.
