Pretty Points

Updating this post, I'm linking up to

Today I got a good start on my November UFO quilt, Checkerboard Flowers.  This is the last flower block of the quilt, called "Pretty Points."  They are poinsettias, which took me making the entire block to figure out.  (That would fall under the column entitled, "Duh".)

This block is unique from the others in the quilt in that the flower "pot" at the bottom is not appliqued, but pleated and sewn on so that it resembles the foil that comes with the pots of poinsettias that one finds in the grocery story during the holiday season.

All that's left on this quilt is the large center applique section.

When the final section of this BOM arrived in my mailbox, of course, I opened it immediately to look at it.  First of all, it's really quite large.  Much larger than it seems when looking at it in this image of the completed quilt.  Further, there is no "key" to let one know which pieces to place first, and it seemed to be up to the quilter to figure all that out on his or her own.  That sort of stopped me dead in my quilting tracks, and I've been dreading it ever since.

Today, I studied the instructions that came with the pattern, and I discovered that indeed there is a suggested order to applying the applique pieces.  It seems overly simplistic, but not as free form as it appeared initially.  I'm feeling much better about finishing it now that I figured that out.  (It pays to read the instructions, although I am loathe to do it.  That goes for any part of my life.)

That was my day, but I wanted to show you these two sweet quilt blocks that Dorothy from New York sent to me for no other reason than sheer generosity.  She is a woman from the Quilting Board who knows I like cats.  She said she had a couple of spare blocks and asked me if I wanted them.  Who, in their right mind, would say no to that?

These are good-sized blocks--large enough to use along with the other 12-1/2 inch blocks I'm receiving from the block swap I'm involved with.

It was a rainy day in Oregon today, so I spent the day sewing.  How did your Thursday go?

That is going to be some quilt. Cute cat blocks you received, too. I really don't like to read the directions, either.

I love the "foil" rather than a pot in the poinsettias block. Very cute cat blocks.

Lots of good times in that sampler you have almost finished. It has rained all day here too. Calm and quiet afternoon behind the computer—just like I like ‘em !~!

That latest block would be a really cute pillow too! I think I'm into pillows lately - possibly because I haven't been sleeping much?

Oh oh oh!!! I love those kitty blocks. Soooo cute!

"They" say it's supposed to rain here tomorrow. We'll see. The last 2 days have been Santa Ana Wind-y & killing my sinuses. I hope they're right!

I'm big on reading instructions...but then again, my daughter says that on tests, my personality lines right up with characteristics of Spock! LOL Live long and ...oh well. Love the cute kitty blocks!

Wow!! That is just gorgeous, Barbara! I'm glad you found that there is some guidance, after all, on that centerpiece. Are you going to try to do it all in one month, or break it into stages? Loved the pleating approach on the pot of this last block!

and what really cool cat blocks she gave you!

I love this checkerboard flower quilt. It looks right up my line of one I'll have to try.
