Design Wall Monday--November 22, 2010

I wonder how much sewing I'll get done this week.  I have a lot to do to get ready for Thanksgiving, but I'm hoping to get in a little bit at least.  For example, I'd like to finish the last of these tulips:

I started on this quilt this summer.  It's all cut out.  Once I get all the tulips finished, I'll just need to sew it together to finish it.  This isn't a very good picture.  They're lavender/purple with a light green background.  Maybe they show up better in this one:

These are the colors I have finished (23 of each).  And this is the last color I need to do (23 of it):

After that, the quilt has a center panel surrounded by a whole bunch of borders of different widths.  It's a very pretty quilt, and so I'm excited to see it all sewn together.

Then, I'm knocking off the blocks of the month that have piled up.  Here's the one I was working on last week:

I only had black and white striped fabric for the bees, which is what the pattern shows.  I didn't think they looked like bees though, and so I used my Sharpie oil pens to fill in the white with yellow.  I like the way that turned out.  Also, it's hard to see, but the flowers in the block (versus the ones in the border) are made from a circle of fabric folded into a hexagon, and then a button is sewn into the center to hold it all together.  My button collection was lacking at the time, and so all the buttons are white.  I might decide to take them out and put in different colors of buttons.  I was tired of working on it though, and so this is where it stands.

Here's the next one I'm working on for this same quilt:

I still need to add Mrs. Bunny and one more birdhouse and bird.  And these are the completed blocks I have so far:

I still have one more block to make on this one to be caught up, and then it will be half finished.  Unfortunately, I have two blocks of another BOM and one of yet another BOM, and so I'm very behind on these.  Since we're leaving on a 3-month-long trip in January though, I'll get behind while we're gone.  I can't get too worked up about being behind on these.  Still, I'd be less far behind if I finished these up before we go.

I'm not sorry I took on so many at once.  I'd never done any BOM's before, and I sort of got bitten by the bug.  Mainly, I think I couldn't make up my mind, and so I just got all the ones I liked.  Never again, though.  I'll only take on one at a time.  I hate being behind, in general.

So how did you do?  Do you feel caught up?  Or behind?

Have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving.  Looking forward to seeing what you've been working on.

Love the tulips!

The BOM you chose looks very work intensive--I can see how easy it would be to fall behind with every block like that! But very cute.

My very first BOM is languishing after completing half the blocks for three months. Four blocks a month was too much for me due to my work schedule (and Quilt ADD)but I plan to work on it over the holidays as I have a week off work.

I apply the Power of 5 rule(adapted from Power of 10)...5 projects (original had 10 but that's too many for me to keep track of) and you work for 60 minutes(original had 3 hours but I lose focus after 1) on one and then go to the next. Then repeat until one is finished. Bonus...after 1 is finished you can add another maybe even a new one.

I love that BOM...no wonder you were enticed to start it!

Very seldom am I ever caught up. I do prefer to work on one thing at a time though. I really like your tulips and look forward to seeing it put together. This BOM project is going to be spectular. I think your constant white button is just fine. Lots and lots of time between now and January!

I'm always behind as I have way too manu works in progress. I try to stay caught up with BOM so that I don't have to pay for the next blocks (if it's local) so that sort of helps. However, the last block and the sewing them into a quilt top sometimes doesn't happen. Just enjoy the process and what's out of your control is out of your control. Have fun!

I'm behind, but not far. But I have projects I haven't begun that need to be done before Christmas. I love all of your blocks. The tulip quilt will be beautiful. Happy Thanksgiving.
