Dodging a Bullet

George is the reluctant hero today.  He's been getting out on the leash at night, but mainly, he doesn't want to walk around much.  He just wants to sit on the steps of the trailer, next to the door.  Mike was sitting outside with him last night, when he looked to his right where the trailer tires are and discovered, to his horror, that the tire was worn down to the cord!  Mike's thought was that the axle on the trailer was crooked somehow or that the tire was out of balance and was getting "scuffed" as we went down the road.

When we left Borrego Springs this morning, we went to the nearest tire place, approximately one mile away, and asked them to put the spare on with the thought of replacing the tire when we get to Hemet.  The tire guy took one look at our tire and said that, in fact, we had a tread separation and were literally minutes (if that much) from a blow out.  This would have been a disaster on so many levels, not the least of which being the damage it would do to the fiberglass structure of the trailer itself.  Were it not for George's timidity, Mike would not have noticed the problem with the tire, and we certainly would have had a blow-out today while traveling the interstate.

We're now traveling on a spare, and Mike's plan is to replace that tire for now, and all of the tires when we get back home.  For now, we'll just watch all of them with eagle eyes.  We're at a nice park tonight with a nice pool and three hot tubs.  They also have sewing in one of the activity rooms on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon.  Mike needs to replace the motor on our jack, and we're going to have some guys come in and wash the trailer.  (Washing your own trailer is generally not allowed in these parks, and so we have to hire someone.  Our trailer is truly filthy right now--at least on the outside.)

So with him working on the trailer for the time being, my plan is to get some sewing done and hang out by the pool and the hot tubs.  Mike likes to play volleyball in the mornings with the rest of the old farts here.  I'm thinking I'll probably do the cutting for my star blocks on our table in the trailer, and then set up my sewing machine in the activity room on Wednesday and sew them together.  I can use their iron and ironing board.  It might be a good time for me to get the appliques done on the next block for my Kitten's Tale quilt too.  Also, there is at least one quilt shop in town, and my RV park VIP card entitles me to 10% off my purchase.  Cool!

So we'll stay put here for a while and take advantage of the amenities.  I'm planning to meet up with Lisa, my friend from high school.  I'd like to get a pedicure too.  So for now, not much sight-seeing--just taking care of repairs and the general business of living.

Glad you found the tire problem. They can really sneak up on you, especially if you are driving a lot of miles. Hope you get a chance to do some sewing in the next day or so.
