A Short Day

There isn't much to tell you about yesterday's activities. It was a driving day. Like any day, it started with kitty lap time. Being Sunday, it was a day of peace and so they snuggled tail to half-tail on Mike's lap. You might say they were purracticing tail tolerance; or, "tailerance." (Smitty just now made up that word.)

It was a three-hour (or so) drive to our final destination of Hopkins, South Carolina.

Hopkins was the closest RV park we could find near Congaree National Park, which is the real object of our desire. We'll be exploring the park today and tomorrow. I'll say more about the park later. We were disappointed that we'll only be able to stay here three nights. The RV park had a weekly rate that was fairly inexpensive, and so we'd hoped to spend the week of Thanksgiving in one place. Instead, we'll be moving on Wednesday to Wilmington, North Carolina...because it happened to be in my North Carolina folder, it happens to be on the way to Kitty Hawk, and they could accommodate us through the remainder of the Thanksgiving holiday.

We've learned something in this experience. Being newly retired and now on our longest-ever RV adventure, we're learning that there are others like us. It occurred to us that everybody traveling by RV wants to be off the road for Thanksgiving, and we should have planned our stay sooner. We won't be caught with our, um, Christmas pants down for Christmas because we expect to find the same RVers wanting to spend that holiday some place other than traveling the interstate. We're not sure where we'll end up for Christmas, but as the time draws near, we'll make a decision and reserve a spot sooner.

As for today, we'll be exploring the national park, and I'll have more to tell you in tomorrow's post. For now, Smitty would like me to pass along that he thought of another job responsibility for kitties.

Guarding the bathroom door against interlopurrs.

With that, I'm signing off for the day. I have stitching in my immediate future.

You are ALL OVER my stomping grounds girlfriend!!! We moved to Nashville in 2004, but North Carolina is where I was raised and where most of my family still lives, so I'm out here quite a lot. I was in SC Saturday celebrating one grandson's birthday, and we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving at another son's house in NC. I wanted to call out Hi when you were in Cades Cove the other day - I was only a few miles away in Waynesville where my Mom lives! And I have been to Mountain Stitches by Susan many times - we go to Gatlinburg to visit all the shops during Mountain Quiltfest every March. Did you visit the Cherry Pit? You will love Wilmington! Getting closer to Nashville all the time ....

That is hard, having to travel the day before. Definitely more campers as you head south, since everything is closed up here. We do have a few that stay open for the ski season but unless I get a bigger trailer, do not want to be stuck in my box, in the cold, lol.

You will love Kitty Hawk! We were there 2 years ago and arrived just in time for a presentation in the museum. It was fascinating. We also walked to the top of the gliding hill and looked at the landing spot. After our visit I did some research on the Wright Brothers and there is a rather sad story--about competitors and illness. The W brothers started out in bicycles as did their competitors.
Don't miss the airplane hall of fame (that's not its real name but I can't remember it). There is some interesting "first" that are recorded and the ones relating to women are quite something. First black woman to get a pilot's licence, (she was refused in the U.S. and went to the UK) and the woman pilot who made an historical flight--that was unfortunately made on the same day as the Titanic sank-- and so received little publicity. It's a fascinating part of history.

I know you will have a plan in place for Christmas. Smitty, at our house, we kitties do not tolerate a closed bathroom door!

Apparently Mike has the longer lap so the tailerance works quite well? At any rate, it looks cozy. Looking forward to what you find at this next stop!

Now I see what you mean by Smitty's half tail. Do tell what happened to it? What Purrfect traveling companions they are!

Oh, I didn't think that finding a RV park for the winter holidays would be hard. Glad the kitties are getting their beauty sleep while you and Mike relax.

Tailerance! Great new word Smitty!
Sorry you have to move on Thanksgiving Eve. We live & learn don't we?
